AFSCME Local 444 passed the following resolution in support of the Campaign for Renters' Rights and bringdownbush.org's plan to send organizers to Louisiana:
WHEREAS the disaster of Hurricane Katrina was not due simply to natural causes but was mainly due to social and political causes; and
WHEREAS there are clearly plans afoot for a massive corporate land grab in and around New Orleans; and
WHEREAS history shows that big business has always sought to exploit such crises in order to increase their profits at the expense of working class and poor people; and
WHEREAS working class and poor people must organize to defend their right for adequate immedia
te aid and for their right to return to their own homes; and
WHEREAS the Campaign for Renters’ Rights has fought for the rights of working class and poor people since 1998; now therefore be it
RESOLVED that AFSCME Local 444 endorses the plan of the CRR to send organizers to the affected areas in order to help people organize to defend their rights; and be it further
RESOLVED that Local 444 donate $500 to the CRR to help finance this campaign; and be it further
RESOLVED that Local 444 seek support for this resolution from other unions and other union locals and our Joint Council 57.
