On behalf of the tenants of Louisbourg Square Apartments who are fighting to keep the only homes they can afford and New Orleans Housing Emergency Action Team, I would like to thank the Times Picayune for the prominent coverage this recieved in today’s paper.
The few tenants who remain in them are a tough bunch, some never left during the hurricanes. The skyrocketing rents have left them no option but to stay, and staying means fighting.
The level of destruction was beyond anything I had ever seen. It looked like any other North American suburb, only carpet bombed.
We won our little holding action, but the landlord offensive starts today.
They all laughed as if I had cracked their inside joke. “That’s the question,” the corporal responded. “That’s the question man, the nature of the system, grease the wheels of business.”
There is so much work and challenges here. A wave of evictions is sweeping the city. I feel up for the fight of a lifetime.
I started sweating on my first day here at 8:30 am. I was loading a 24 foot Penske truck with boxes to send to another distro center. We have an 8:00 roll call/meeting every morning. Right afterwards we lined up fire bucket style to load the truck.
